My gran passed away 2.5 years ago. Has it already been that long? It feels like it was just yesterday that we held her funeral. Anyway, she had been ill for a while, so her passing was a blessing we felt. Needless suffering does no one any good.
While she was ill, some relatives talked about putting her in a senior citizens home in the day, but we quickly vetoed that idea. Somehow, the idea of putting our grandmother in a home was just beyond thinking. My parents undertook the task of looking after her, which was admirable on their part. You see, our nursing or senior citizens homes here aren’t like those overseas e.g. San Francisco senior care. We have heard too many stories about old people being ignored or worse, ill treated. We could never do that to our grandma!
Maybe because we are Asians with the concept of filial piety built into our upbringing and education, the thought of sending our aged parents to a home just doesn’t gel. They dedicated their lives to bringing us up so we are the successful individuals today. We can’t repay our parents by sending them away at the time of their lives when they need us the most, right?
