Are pendrives easily corruptible?

I’m pulling my hair out in frustration. This is the second time in so many weeks that my pendrive has delivered me a corrupted Excel file.

The first time, I worked till past midnight on a document, patting myself on the back for getting it ready while swatting away the mosquitoes. I saved it on my pendrive, and went to bed. The next day, I tried to open the file, and was faced with a pop up message saying that the file was corrupted and could not be read or was not recognised or something equally inane. Needless to say, I was livid. But there was nothing I could do except re-do the whole document.

Things had been going well for a while. Then, yesterday, I saved something from my PC at work into my pendrive and took it home to be updated. To my horror, the same incomprehensible message popped up on two files, to tell me that the files were corrupted/could not be recognised yadda yadda….. I tell you, its enough to make a girl want to go bald! This time, I think I have a back up on hard disk, so the recovery isn’t as difficult, but will still be time consuming.

So, is it true that information saved on pendrives are easily corrupted? Is it due to their portability? My pendrive is about 2 years old. Is it showing its age? Or did I just get a dud?

You are not alone. My boss also having same prob with his 2gb pendrive :P

I suspect it may not be the original stuff ;) I verily believe (like affidavit lah) that original pendrives are not supposed to fail so easily.

never bet your life on it.
Especially cutesy ones with no-name brands….kekeke..
    i’ve learnt my lesson.
Always back-up the stuffs in ur pendrive. Its only useful for mobility and not storage. serious.

    Hi sweets!
I have 2 kingston ones; 1 from 4 years ago,one is from last year. So far zero failure rate. Mebbe yours a dud?
Also you have to make sure you do that shutoff procedure carefully. And of course always make a backup on your harddrive.

BTW, can I take these things thru a security gate at airport? Will the xray thingy erase my stuff?

Hmm…I’ve had mine since 2003, and they’re still working fine whether it’s a no-name one or Kingston. I do know of a couple of instances where the information didn’t have a chance to transfer completely over before disconnecting the drive, hence the info got corrupted.

Oh, and as far as I know, the X-ray thingy at the airport doesn’t affect info on the drive (was muchos important to me when I was travelling!) :D

You gotta do it the hard way.
    1. Click on the Safely Remove Hardware
    2. Select your pendrive and click on Stop
    3. When it says it’s safe to remove your hardware, THEN you yank it out.

I’ve found that if I don’t do this and just yank, my files get corrupted. If I do this, then everything a-ok.

ADOI. Then you must call in the X-Files + CSI team. Or maybe you should check your DNA and see if you’re a Hero. LOL

    Hmmmm… lemme think for a bit longer…
