Have you called her recently?
Or are you waiting for that one weekend in May before you pick up the phone?
Have you taken her out for a good meal?
Or are you waiting for the one day a year when restaurants serve mediocre food and are packed to the brim with people having the same idea as you.
Have you gone to see her recently?
Or are you waiting for the whole clan to descend on her so you barely spend any time with her.
Have you said “I love you”?
Or are you waiting for that one day in a year to do it?
Mother’s Day is yet another hallmark day. A day for restaurants to churn out standard set meals while they wait for people to fight for a table. A day for card makers to rub their hands together with glee as their Mother’s Day cards fly off the shelves. A day for gift people to stand by with manic grins on their faces as people rush to get perfumes, makeup and other mumsy gifts for their moms.
Mothers expect to be treated specially on this day and they should. Its their day after all.
You gave her 3 months of morning sickness, 6 months of looking like she stuffed a beachball up her dress, 3 years of worry, 18 years of stress and a lifetime of stretchmarks. For some of you, she went through it more than once, because she gave you siblings. She absolutely deserves to be treated on this one day in a year.
But she similarly deserves just as much on the other days of the year, not just the 2nd Sunday of May or whenever else your country celebrates Mother’s Day.
So, don’t wait for Memory Lane or Hallmark to remind you that its your mother’s day.
Pick up the phone and call her on other days. Take her out on normal days when the food at restaurants are better and there are less crowds. Drop by and see her without your siblings and the rest of the clan making a ruckus.
Say I love you, Mum.
These gestures and words need no special day for every day is and should be your mother’s day.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums who read this!!

Happy Mother’s Day to your mum!
so sad, growing up we never say that to one another & will feel really silly saying it now!
“These gestures and words need no special day for every day is and should be your mother’s day.”
Total agree with you, ParisB.
And yeah, Wuching, it’s a bit shy for me to say “Mom, I love you” to my mother ‘cuz our family members were never taught to use that 3 meaningful words among each other. I think most Asian families are like that. But anyway, Happy Mother’s Day to all mums! moms! mothers! mamas! ma’s! mees!

Those are my little nesting dollies! :O
Great post! I was thinking the same thing. All these occasions are getting so commercialized these days. When all it takes is a hug and an “I Love YOU”, you certainly don’t need to spend a fortune! Every day is Mother’s Day.
And this year will be my second time celebrating it
Well written! *clap clap clap*
Happy Mother’s Day to ParisB’s mum!
*toodles off to look for my own mum*
