I had a shock of my life and need to recover so I’m all a twitter now.
♥♥♥♥♥
It all began with my half-assed attempt to upgrade to Wordpress 2.2. Why? Because everyone say “Must upgrade! Its new! Its better! Its da bomb!” So I did and nearly killed my Kitchen Experiments website.
♥♥♥♥♥
Moral of the story, boys and girls, never attempt a shortcut to upgrading your wordpress or whatever blogging platform you use. Backup, unplug your plugins and then upgrade and pray like mad to whatever God you believe in that it works. I got lucky and using a bit of logic, managed to get it back upgraded and all.
♥♥♥♥♥
Speaking of backing up, I have a confession. I haven’t backed up my sites and I don’t know how to. If anything happens, I don’t know how to restore it either. Help?
 ♥♥♥♥♥
Should I PPP-tize this site? The 3 month deadline looms. Will everyone just hate me if I do?

Yeah, I always backup before upgrading. However, I hardly turn off the plugins…usually check online to see what’s working and what’s not…
PB says: Now if I can just figure out how to backup…
I’m scared to upgrade to 2.2 too, in case anything happens to my site! having said that, I should upgrade it someday to the latest version… procrastinate as usual, lol!
usually for backup, there should be a Control Panel of sorts (if you’re with exabytes it’s called CpanelX) where you can download the entire site and DB in zipped files.
PB says: I do have a Cpanel but don’t know how to work it lol! Anyway I’ll un-idiotise myself one of these days.
I will hate you if you don’t PP-tised this site!
PB says: Ouch Ah Pek!
Muahah… We’re in the same predicament! I’m an idiot when it comes to upgrading because I don’t know much about mandatory upgrades and security patches and what-have-yous. That’s why they say “Knowledge is Power”
PB says: I just upgraded to 2.13 or whatever it was and that was nerve wracking enough! 2.2 will have to wait!
And this is why I don’t have my own website. Hehehe. I can barely tweak the HTML template of my Blogger site as it is. *grin*
PB says: After a bit, I actually found it easier to tweak Wordpress than Blogger! But Blogger was a good learning experience
Well, I’ll love you forever, regardless of whether you PP-whatever this site or not. Hehe.
PB says: Aww… *hugs* Thanks for the support!
Haha…I’m too lazy to upgrade to 2.2 coz I just upgraded to 2.1.3 recently. Quite alot of trouble to disable all the plugins, etc. Later la, maybe…*grin*
As for backing-up your site, you might want to check out this plugin which you can schedule to run automatically: http://www.ilfilosofo.com/blog/wp-db-backup. Easy to install, I had no problems though you might want to check with the developer to ensure that it’s compatible with WP2.2…=)
PB says: Ooh I shall look at your plugin. This site is still not yet on Wp2.2 I got scared off after I tried updating the other one.
The simple way to do a backup of your site (which I am using) is to just export the blog out using the Export tool in Wordpress. It saves your file in an XML format. So in case something happens, just recreate your blog using that XML file.
As for the Wordpress 2.2 upgrade, I’ve not done it yet. I’m waiting for it to appear automatically on my cPanel option so I can upgrade with just a mere click (which was how I’d upgraded to the earlier versions anyways!)
PB says: Your way sounds idiot-proof! My 2.2 appeared on my cpanel thats how the whole thing started!
