I was tagged by Wuching who just went Wuching dot-com and Kyh for the same tag. What are the odds guys?! Anyway, these 2 guys, one in Melbourne and one in Kuala Lumpur both want to know what’s my favourite food from my state or country. I’m from Johor and my favourite food may well just be kuey-chap. Flat rice noodles in a clear broth with pickled radish (chai po) served usually with braised soy meat and innards. Haha…. the innards got you didn’t it?!
Anyway, while in KL, I can’t find kuey-chap. Maybe I’m not looking in the right places or maybe no one in KL eats it. So, I’ll feature lor-bak with teng-kia – braised pork with small intestines.
This is from a stall off Jalan Raja Laut in KL that my family and I frequent for their home-cooked style food. Their braised pork leg is scrumptious having just the right amount of soy sauce and its been braised so long that the meat is practically falling off the bone.
If you ask the man for lean meat, he’ll pick up a pork shank from his giant pot and with a deft flick of his knife, de-bone it. He doesn’t have to do much as the meat is already so tender and soft. It comes with pork intestines (don’t gag!) braised in a similar fashion. Tasty!!
So this is what I enjoy – cholestorol inducing as it is. Live to eat I say! Eating to live gets too boring sometimes.

I am cooking something in my oven that smells so delicious right now (Baked chicken with mixed vegetables), so I am not that affected by your favorite food today! LOL.. *phew* But I am sure that lobak with teng-kia is drool inducing any other time!
PB says: lol… *sniffs the air* whatever you are cooking sounds delicious! Now you make me drool!
They have kuey-chiap here in Penang! I was totally eating it at least once a week when I was preggers! I didn’t know it was a Johorean dish!
PB says: Really? I think its a Hokkien/Teochew dish and in Penang? I must try it there if I go. I can’t find it in KL

Can find koay chap easily in Sarawak. Slurp.
PB says: Ooh ya I remember eating it in Kuching – slurp indeed!
OOOH. This makes me think most longingly indeed of the chu chap chok I had in Ipoh. Rice porridge with crisply fried innards. YUM.
Where’s this kuey chap you saw in Johor, PB?
PB says: Wahh you must eat the one at Jalan Silang then in KL. Salty like mad but tasty. And I usually have the kuey chap at Bentayan.
Hmm… kuey chap sounds familiar but I can’t put my finger on it…
PB says: Its sorta hard to explain. Like large pieces of kuey teow instead of long strips.
