Face the music and dance!

by ParisB on July 2, 2007

I’m back! :) I can breathe again! *takes deep breath*

Thank you to all who said they missed my fluff. To make up for my absence, I’m going to try to make up for it by over dosing you with Paris B’s fluff!

Anyway, while I was working at home over the past 2 weeks, I would get distracted by all kinds of everything. So, in order to make me focus, I put in my CDs of classical music and blasted them at top volume. Its known that music, especially classical music, stimulates certain parts of the brain that helps with concentration and inspiration. Its also known that my neighbours now probably hate me – LOL!

Well, it helped to an extent, for I did manage to complete a major part of my work. However, an interesting observation that arose was that I found myself thinking of certain things when certain music was playing.

Its quite true you know, that music can be associated with many events, things, people and here is a selection of the music I played and what went through my mind as they played. I don’t know how to embed music. I don’t know where to start looking so I’m sorry I can’t provide musical accompaniment, much as I’d like to. If you google the titles, you should be able to get some music clips off the net somewhere to jog your memory of the tunes.

Tchaikovsky – 1812 Overture (cannonballs)

ArcTriomphe09

Victory. The Arc de Triomphe. That’s what I associate it with. I love the versions that have cannons in them. This is an inspiring tune for me, for it never fails to rouse up the “go-get-em” spirit. Just what I needed to get me going. I actually put this on repeat play when I started LOL…

Tchaikovsky – Waltz from Sleeping Beauty

22a_AuroraMeetsScarecrow

Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. I don’t know if it’s a good or bad association. Bit of a philistine association eh? The waltz from sleeping beauty was put to words in Disney’s version of the Sleeping Beauty where Aurora sings “I know you I walked with you once upon a dream…” in the forest, with the animals. Remember that scene? I love that scene ok – so cute and who doesn’t dream of walking with their Prince Charming through a forest

Beethovan – Fur Elise

ChildPiano

My mom! LOL… I used to play the piano. My mom loved Fur Elise and though she couldn’t play the piano nor was she trained in music, she could tell off the bat if I hit a wrong note. So, I hated this piece then. Absolutely hated it. I’d try to get out of playing it when I could, but mom would request it and I’d cringe when I played it. I was never really good at music.

Ride of the Valkyries

Opera_woman

Opera singers. Brunhilda. Large. German woman. Blonde pigtails. Steel helmet. Steel breatplate. Impressive breasts. Sorry for the stereotype but that’s the image conjured up in my mind.

Ravel – Bolero

Until today, when I hear the opening strains of Bolero, all I can think about is Torvill and Dean. Who? Torvill and Dean were a British ice-skating pair who were Olympic gold medalists in 1984 with a perfect score of 6.0 across the board. They retired after that. However, in the Winter Olympics of 1994, they staged their comeback – older and possibly more experienced. They only won bronze in what was roundly agreed as biased judging but their routine won great acclaim.

Bolero was the song they skated to in 1984 that won them the gold medal in Sarajevo before it became a wartorn city. It was an awesome performance. I was in the UK during the comeback period and since they were a British pair and all, the TV stations played their past triumph over and over again, and it gave me goosebumps every single time. It was an absolutely beautiful performance. Until today, I associate Bolero with them and their routine still gives me the goosebumps.

What an odd assortment of images eh? I’m going to leave you with a Youtube video of the famous Torvill and Dean triumph in 1984 skated to Bolero. Make sure your speakers are turned on to fully appreciate it. Love love love!!

So, what do you associate with the music you hear?

I remember Torville & Dean! But Bolero reminds me more of Dudley Moore & Bo Derek’s 10! And The Ride of the Valkyries ~ Apocalypse Now!
But thanks for the video. It was nice to watch again that magic performance.

PB says: You remember them? But yes its abolutely magical isn’t it?

Weeee!!!! I didn’t know you also like classical. I like Autumn from the 4 Seasons. The violin movements are out of this world! Kudos to Vivaldi!

PB says: Winter is pretty nice too. Spring though lively and nice is a bit too overplayed for me

I remember that “I know you” song from Sleeping Beauty too! I used to *dance* to it as well! And I too am in love with classical music…. :)

And if that ain’t enough, I used to play Fur Elise too…but I heard it once in a ghost movie, so I would associate Fur Elise with horror scenes :P

PB says: ooh *shivers* I hate horror movies. For me horror means Ring-a-Ring-a-Roses… *shudder*

You’ll Never Walk Alone – with the glory of Liverpool FC and a certain night in May 2005 when I jumped around and went beserk and wept tears of joy (I’m predictable).

Ride of the Valkyries – Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd… in a cartoon where Bugs was dressed up as Brunhilda. Wonder if anyone else saw that one…

PB says: Aiyo! Bugs bunny pulak! What’s up doc?

First time here. So, hi! You got your own style in terms of writing. I think you might be just another SOB. :)

Anyway, we (hubby and I) like to collect soundtracks. to me, all the music created specially for a movie, meaning soundtracks, when you listen careful, the music itself has its own storyline. That’s where our imagination can run wild, and think of stuffs like, when we are successful, our sweet and romantic moments, our future lives and so on…….

PB says: Welcome! :) Soundtracks are fun. I used to buy them too. But I’ve since lost track lol…

I adore ice skating! Never heard of Torvill and Dean before today, but their performance was simply superb! 10 out of 10! Or rather, 6 out of 6!

PB says: Beautiful right? They so deserved their win

my absolute favourites would be Liszt’s Liebestraum (both piano and orchestra versions), and Vivaldi’s 4 Seasons. all the classical pieces you mentioned brought back many memories of my childhood days when I learnt the piano. mmm, I think I’ll put on a piece at home tonight… :)

PB says: do do! Its relaxing and inspiring!
