Ah yes. The title says it all really. :P

I don’t know how many people watched the Merdeka eve celebrations (on tv where else?) but I did, out of curiousity. And my curiousity was rewarded when I realised that although there was supposed to be a re-enactment of 30 August 1957, there was no lowering of the Union Jack at the stoke of midnight. Instead, there was a “symbolic” lowering of the flag – whatever that means. How do you re-enact something without going through the paces? So much for a re-enactment.

Without the lowering of the Union Jack, the raising of the Malaysian flag means nothing because it was already fluttering in the breeze earlier and only lowered down to be re-raised – complex? I thought so. I also thought that there was a ruling that when the Negaraku plays everyone is to stand at attention without moving. So, how come the flag bearer and the flag raiser gets to move? Hmm…

Also, someone should have told the Number One’s speech writer that shouting “Merdeka!” at intermittent times throughout his speech does not make it more easy to listen to. It was an Independance Day speech. It should have been firey and wholehearted designed to instill the spirit of independence and nationalism into the people. It should not have been delivered in the manner of someone trying to put the crowd to sleep or to hypnotize the crowd (hypnotism doesn’t work for the polls if you don’t call your election like, NOW). It was also not a syair (Malay poem) that was to be delivered in a droning flat tone. It was supposed to be a speech! Incidentally, I have no idea what was said. All I heard was “mumble…mumble… MERDEKA!… mumble mumble… drone drone… MERDEKA!” Blek.

My brother carried back a strange fruit called a “tarap” from East Malaysia. Very fascinating! Watch out for pictures and my take on it on Pink Parisian (if the photos ever get uploaded). It was a strange assault on the senses that’s for sure.

I stuffed my face to the gills over this long weekend. Celebration dinner with karaoke entertainment (gasp!) and a yummy dinner with extended family members I haven’t seen in ages at Pantai Seafood. Even long lost cousins turned up! Woohoo! We must do this again soon!

I’m at my office and I hear the wail of bagpipes. The bagpipes tell me I might have been tele-ported to Bonny Scotland. The weather tells me I’m kidding myself. From my office window, I saw a bunch of people in Army fatigues playing the bagpipes by a tank at Stadium Merdeka. Why? I have absolutely no idea.

I didn’t even bother to watch anything on national telly. Heh. So much for patriotism, eh?

May: I saw that band at the Curve too! But not on Merdeka Day… it was the Sunday before that. Did you realize it’s our local army guys who are tooting those bagpipes?

May: I didn’t see the parade. I never do heh…

Rinnah: I have no choice coz I have no Astro but I don’t go near RTM.

Giddy Tiger: I don’t sing though. I just get entertained.

Leah: I noticed that too – the bagpipes I mean. I’m not sure of the significance. But this was yesterday 4 Sept which was weird.

That cartoon is so funny. I would not mind to own some bagpipes. Must be my Scottish blood motivating me so.
