Matroishka, Babushka, Mama, Mom

by ParisB on September 6, 2007

Giddy Tigers did a lovely lovely ode to her Mom with cute picture and all. I unfortunately am not so talented. However, I remembered this picture I posted up for my Mother’s Day post and it was fitting because there are 3 of us women in the family – Mom, me and sis (who I can’t tag for this one – darn!).

It is also fitting because my Mom loves these Russian nesting dolls or Matroishka dolls. She waited and watched for years and years, always admiring from afar but never being able to afford them. Everything changed in these 2 years. Sis’s friend went to Russia and she in turn went off to Khazakhstan and she brought home loads of these little dollies. Mom is now a self-proclaimed expert on the quality of these things. :)

Mom was a history buff. Otherwise I don’t think she would have made a very good history teacher. But she was. An excellent one until she switched over to teaching English later in her career. I’m happy to say I did not take History as a subject at school (hated it with a vengence) but sis did, and scored an A1 in the SPM through one night’s super duper intensive coaching and some clever spotting on Mom’s part.

Mom is also an entrepreneur. She works hard and tirelessly (still!) and is quite an authority in whatever she does, which is wonderful if you ask me. She too absolutely loves being in demand although we have told her to slow down now. Her answer? “Maybe when I have grandchildren.” Aiyoh… pressure…

Remember I said once that I don’t understand the stock market? Well, Mom does understand the stock market! She understands it so well despite not having any training, she is my personal financial advisor.  Now where did that gene go?

Mom cooks a mean dry chicken curry and soy sauce chicken rice. My Dad was forever talking about making her set up a restaurant with him at the till :) I’m trying my darnedst to learn up her recipes but its never as yummy as the ones she makes.

For all Mom’s determination and stubborness, she is clueless about technology. Computers are as alien to her as mobile phones are. It can be a pain so its quite lucky that none of us are living overseas. She’s since picked up using a mobile phone, but if she can live without it, she will! Drives us up the wall she does.

Maybe because she used to be a teacher used to commanding a classroom of 40 high school students, Mom has a built in microphone. It was useful for brow-beating contractors to do your bidding, but can be ear-splitting in closed confined spaces.

She’s my mom, whatever it is and I love her to bits!

So, will these people tell me 8 facts about their moms too?

I’d love for her to give me a crash course on the stock market, while eating that curry you mentioned!

*nods along sagely at GT’s comment and hopes to avoid the built-in microphone*

At my first job, a vocal trainer was hired to train us how to throw our voice. I can talk to 200 students without microphone, but i tried very hard to control that in my normal conversation, so you can say it’s occupational hazzard.:-)

Your Mom sounds fantastic! I taught English too and I am a History buff as well. Would love to chat with your Mom – in the meantime, her daughter is a lot of fun ;-)

Thanks for the tag…I didn’t know about it until I swung by. Will try to hop and skip to it.

Sounds like you have a great Mom. I wanna meet her so I can learn some Malaysian history. Not easy to learn over here. Even with the internet. I want details. haha

*hats off* (to your momma)

I love those Russian dolls! I planned to get a set but I haven’t found a nice one to buy.

my mom’s a bit of a stock market whizz too. I must learn those skills from her!

GT: That would be fun eh? I can’t understand half of what she tries to tell me lol…

Rinnah: hehe… she can be loud :P

Leah: It must be that. Trying to control so many students lends to a louder than normal voice.

Kitty: Sorry! I meant to drop you a note to tell you about the tag!

SA: Thanks yes she’s great.

May: You see, all our moms are making money on the stock market and their daughters are looking blankly at the numbers LOL
