Naked druids, standing stones and Paypal money!

by ParisB on October 1, 2007

I have always been fascinated by the Arthurian legend, Excalibur, Magic, Merlin, knights in shining armour and olde Englande shrouded in cold mist and mystery.

Stonehenge epitomizes this legend. Over the centuries, these standing stones have been a mystery – no one knows why they were placed as such, what their purpose was, and whether it is a huge cosmic joke or maybe a UFO landing strip.

In previous times, during the Spring solstice, druids (or people professing to be druids) will come from all over to salute the sun and basically throw a big party at Stonehenge and dance naked because apparently, that’s what druids do. So, after many years of such druid hijinks, the English authorities had had enough and they have barricaded the standing stones for reasons of “preservation”. I personally think that the barricade is merely so they don’t have to deploy large numbers of policemen to Stonehenge every year to watch over men and women purporting to conduct arcane mystical ceremonies involving white nightgowns, golden sickles, dancing by moonlight and maybe a virgin or two?

So now, the only way to view Stonehenge is to stand about 50m or so away. You are directed to walk in a counter-clockwise direction and there is no turning back. It takes away the magic and mystery of the place because you feel like you are in a huge open air museum, walking around an exhibit. But you have to do it anyway, because its Stonehenge and it really is an awesome sight up close i.e. 50m away.

And this rambly story takes me to a picture of my desktop which Giddy Tiger requested for.

I use Stonehenge on my work desktop because it reminds me of how mysterious my work can be and makes me wonder how it happened this way :P

From a practical viewpoint, I chose it because it came with Windows and from experience, it doesn’t matter what appears on my desktop because all my work (and play) windows are always maximised anyway!

dollars

And on an unrelated front, Malaysians can now take money out of Paypal but only into their credit cards. Reports are that Visa is the one accepted for now although Mastercard is stated as being allowed. I haven’t tried it myself though.

What is means for us Malaysians is that our hard-earned USD from doing paid posts can now be taken out and used by us to buy stuff locally. Do we really want to do that? I won’t, not because I don’t trust the system but because I’d prefer to save up the money for now, rather than put it on my credit card and spend it.

But it is nice to have an option. Maybe I could withdraw some money to my credit card and use it to get me a digital camera? Or maybe an N-Series Nokia phone? Or maybe shop till I drop at The Gardens and Pavilion? Or maybe… maybe…

Maybe I could just get cash and save it up for a rainy day… kinda like today… blah…
