I tell you, its no joke being short.
I’ve been “lucky” before this in the sense that most of my friends and the people I know aren’t very tall or even if they are, they are just a little taller than I am. Or maybe I just unconsciously don’t hang around with many very tall people at the same time.
So, I’d never really noticed how tall (or short) I was until this past weekend.
I’d met up with 3 others over lunch. With everyone sitting down, it was easy to see eye to eye and chat amiably. I never really realised just how much difference a simple act of standing up would make.
But, at the end of the meal when everyone stood up, I found myself surrounded by giants. Everyone was at least half a head (or so) taller than I was. I never felt more conscious nor more uncomfortable as when I realised that:
- I had to look upwards to talk to them
- They had to look down to talk to me. (which was actually embarrassing for me)
I felt very much like Merryweather and Pippin, the Hobbits who were talking to the Ents in The Lord of the Rings. If you’ve ever been in the same situation you’d know what I mean.
So, what this tells me is that I have to wear heels (it gives some illusion of height) around these people or risk having that sinking feeling again. And at 5′ 2.5″ I did not think I was THAT short!

I know EXACTLY how you feel, PB! *glances at TM and his family* I’m not exactly short myself, but I feel positively midgety each time I’m with TM and family. Talking with them while standing literally becomes a pain in the neck for me after some time bec of all the looking up.
*helpful tip*…stand a bit further back when you’re talking to them so that the height diff isn’t that obvious…
When you speaketh, your speaketh like a giant
All the false giants will flee at thy sight.
Cheesey: Oh yeah, you would and you are taller than I am! Its unnerving for me though.
Beetrice: Thanks. I’ll have to stand further away
Pablo: And that was a very very nice thing to say!
You’re much closer to Earth… Doesn’t feel that chilly…
Uhm, I’m just a wee bit taller than you but I always feel that everyone else (female, that is) is mostly shorter than me!
Well, good thing is you get to wear 4-inch stillettos!! I would LOVE to wear those, but if I do, I would be one of them giants you spoke about.
LB: I like that analogy!
Rinnah: Yeah lots of us hobbits around…
GT: Wow! 4 inches! I think I might try that
