Where’s the CSI team when you need them?

Way back in May 2007 (a scant 6 months ago) I took possession of my then new Samsung SGH E830 mobile phone. Whilst I never really warmed up to the phone nor fall in love with it the way I used to my previous phones, I rather liked the little bugger.

And now its gone :(

But this is where the fun starts, for this nifty little gadget came with a feature called UTrack. Essentially, upon activation of the service, should the phone go missing and someone else find it and insert another SIM card into the phone, the phone will immediately send a message from that number to your pre-assigned contacts.

And when my phone went missing, the next day, my siblings received a message from the person’s mobile number and giving my IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number of my phone.

For posterity, its going to be recorded here:

IMEI: 353496 01 066078/8

Thief’s phone number: 016-XXX XXXX (removed for safety reasons)

I’m assuming its the thief’s number of course. It could just be someone the phone was fenced to *shrug* Anyway, I called Samsung to see what they can do about it, and to my despair, they said nothing. :(

There is a way to disable or block the phone from functioning, apparently, but its not available here until next year. However, they did say they would put the IMEI number out in the grapevine so their official service centres are aware its a stolen phone - much good it’ll do me. I want the phone rendered useless!!

So, here’s a challenge to all phone hackers. If you can and are willing to do me a huge favour, tell me if the phone can be disabled by using the IMEI and if you can do it remotely? In return, you will earn my everlasting respect and gratitude. I don’t intend to call them and embroil myself in any tangle and the number has been given to the police (who aren’t very helpful).

I’m using the only way I know how to get back - through cyberspace. I don’t reckon the thieves will read this, but if they do and they are, let it be known that I have placed a curse on the phone and my wallet and its contents - may warts grow where the sun don’t shine and cause you to itch till you are walking like cross-eyed ducks.

So yes, thats the IMEI info and the mobile number of the miscreants - please tell me someone can do something about it? Or maybe I should make a few crank calls from a public phone booth *evil cackle*

Heh, if only we could do what Mission Impossible does: This Phone will SELF DESTRUCT, along with anything within 5 meters, in 5 seconds.. Seeing as you do not wish to have anything to do with the person holding that phone, there’s not much I don’t think you can do..

I totally second your prank phone call idea :P

My guess is that your ex-phone was sold by the thief to a phone dealer and subsequently sold to a buyer as a 2nd hand phone. It is unlikely that a thief would want to use your phone (not that there is anything wrong with your phone) as he would rather want to get cash out of it than risk being caught with stolen property. My 2 cents ;)

Why I thought so? There was once when I was having a meal at a mamak stall when I saw a suspicious character taking 3 phones to sell to a phone dealer ;)

kyh: I’m thinking its sold too.

LB: Yeah I’d rather not have anything to do with the person who holds that number. What if he’s a serial killer?!

    GT: Maybe I should eh?

Pablo: Yes I think its been sold too. It was likely stolen by petty thieves who need a quick buck to fund their drug habit :P
