Not even fruits escape the mysticism and significance of the Chinese New Year. Since the Chinese like everything bright, new, clean and prosperous, I now bring you the Chinese New Year Prosperity Fruits!
I knew about the pumpkins, although I’m unclear on the significance. Might it be in the Chinese name? Might it be in the bright orange skin? These pumpkins are small (unlike Halloween pumpkins where larger = better) and bright orange and as far as I know, inedible. They are just put on altars or placed as decorative pieces and dry out after a spell. You have to admit they look really cheery sitting on the table with the kum (mandarin oranges) and a red ribbon tied around its stalk.
Last weekend, I saw these strange looking fruits at the fruit store.
They look to be a type of gourd but gourds that come in very strange shapes. They have irregular angles and protrusions and come in strange yellow, green and orange colours with black tips. Does anyone know what these are when they are at home, and what is their significance for the Chinese New Year?
Anyone?

These “prosperity fruits” bring prosperity to the people who sell them to the ignorant people who think that they will prosper just by buying and displaying them at home. I wonder why people are still not wise enough to see these…
But of course, if people buy them just for the sake of decor, that’s a different thing altogether. Sometimes I just get so ashamed that being chinese is synonymous with making more money and being prosperous to the exclusion of other values.
The lil pumpkins look so grand and yet cute at the same time! Will they turn into carriages?
Have a happy week ahead… here’s something to get you started!
What weird looking “prosperity” fruits! I have never seen it before… by the by, I have tagged you with the same tag as GT!
And I thought those are fake plastic fruits in the second picture! They’re REAL?!
I’ve never come across these weird looking gourds! Anyway, I’ve been away too long too… I want my YEE SANG!! Actually, just gimme Lormaikai, eh? *grin*
Pablo: Teehee… Yep! Decor is fine but belief should stop at the door.
GT: I think they’ll turn into mini carriages?
Tag done!
Rinnah: I just saw it for the first time this year and tag done!
Pelf: They did feel real… I think they are
LB: *prepares to teleport lormaikai to LB*
errr… those Chinese Prosperity Fruit gourds don’t look all that prosperous wan… so thin and scraggly! you would’ve thought prosperous fruits are like the pumpkin, fat and round. maybe that’s the significance? *grin*
Sure look like pumpkins to me! Wonder if some marketing twist…Err, I also thought those guards were plastic fruits
