I was down in Johor Bahru on the weekend and elected to put up at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Johor Bahru. I’d stayed there before a few years ago and it was the only hotel in JB that really stayed in my mind.

Well, I have nothing good to say about the Hyatt Regency this time:
- The parking is far from the hotel and lobby and lighting in the car park is dim.
- The rooms had a old musty smell even though it was a non-smoking room
- There were old stains on the carpets
- They tried to make us pay RM34 for 2 cans of Guinness which no one consumed
Honestly, it was the last bit that really got my goat.
Upon checkout at about 2.30pm, we discovered that there was an additional RM34 on the bill. Upon enquiry, we were told that it was for 2 cans of Guinness we had consumed from the minibar.
At this point, let me flashback to 15 minutes before checkout:
I was getting ready to check out and there was a ring from room service. I opened the door and standing there was a room service waiter with 2 cans of Guinness in his hand. He said he wanted to place them in the minibar, so I let him in. He placed it in the minibar, did not make me sign anything, said thank you and left.
Upon hearing that they were charging RM34 for 2 cans of Guinness, we said “Hello! Your room service came to put the 2 cans INTO the minibar! We did not consume it!” There was no protest nor did reception check to see if we were telling the truth. Immediately, they gave us a rebate of RM34 off the bill.
I was absolutely shocked.
I wonder if it was a hotel scam. How did they know if any drinks were missing from the mini bar if no one checked the room upon checkout? How did the room service waiter know they had to replenish 2 cans of Guinness BEFORE we had even checked out? Did they enter the room BEFORE we checked out?
It is for these reasons I will NOT stay at the Hyatt Regency Johor Bahru again.
Does anyone know of any other decent hotels in JB? I’m told by people from JB there are none - haha…

How about the old Pan Pacific Puteri? Now donno what name liao. Stayed there a few years back but again, donno what’s the condition now.
I haven’t been there for quite a while, but you’re right… there’s not too many nice hotels unless you’re willing to pay 5 star prices.
Based on what you’ve written, it certainly sounds like a scam!
I would avoid this hotel in the future. Yucky stains on carpets gross me out!
LB: Ya if it was mo meng budget hotel I’d anticipate it but shocking coming from Hyatt.
Pablo: I recall that too but the last time I stayed there years ago, the bathroom overflowed. Was told to avoid like plague now.
Adino: I’m willing to pay 5star prices but there are no 5 star hotels available! Yes avoid this hotel at all costs.
RM34 for 2 cans of Guinness? say lor, “I go supermarket buy you back 2 cans, much much cheaper!” what scammers…
You were in JB?? Haha..I JUST only came back frm there this morning - was there for my grandma’s bday dinner.
On hotels, I heard that the Crystal Crown and Zon Hotel aren’t too bad…but haven’t had the chance to stay there yet. There’s also this freaky-looking New York Hotel that is at a serious disadvantage - it already looks bad from the OUTSIDE..*LOL*
So sorry to hear about your “adventurous” stay in the Hyatt hotel. A bit out of ordinary, isn’t it, for the chain to be in such unprofessional manner.
[...] 19th, 2008 | Travel, Food, Fun by ParisB Just like Beetrice, I was down in JB at the awful Hyatt Regency Johor Bahru hotel on the weekend. I went down rather late on Friday evening, and [...]

Beetrice: Ooh avoid the New York Hotel. I’ve heard horrid things about it.
Andie: Absolutely! You don’t expect these underhand tactics from chain hotels.
Rinnah: Heh… I hope people find this post when they look for Hotels in JB then!
Why, those scammers!! Tsk tsk…this is the one that can be seen from some country club right? I remember oohing and aahing at it when I was a little girl last time..
Is the Holiday Inn still there in JB?
