Buddy you’re a boy make a big noise
Playin’ in the street gonna be a big man some day
You got mud on yo’ face
You big disgrace
Kickin’ your can all over the place
We will we will rock you
Singin’
We will we will rock you
It was a very very busy weekend for me with work going on through the weekend in Singapore. A full day’s meeting on Saturday left me totally washed out, until I was offered tickets to see We Will Rock You at the Esplanade Theatre. Did I want to? You bet I did!

I was planning to go anyway, but thought that this weekend might be too rushed. So yes, I was super duper thrilled and perked up immediately at the offer. Free ticket some more, who don’t want?!
Did I enjoy it? Of course I did! The music was awesome (and loud) and I was bouncing along on my seat although the people I went with were of the more staid persuasion and found the music “too loud”. Sigh… Here, read the synopsis of the musical if you don’t know it already:-
THE ELECTRIFYING MUSICAL THAT’S GUARANTEED TO BLOW YOUR MIND
We Will Rock You, the musical by Queen and Ben Elton, UK’s most successful comic writer, is an electrifying show that’s guaranteed to blow your mind and is set to rock Singapore from 28 March 2008 at the Esplanade Theatre.
Now in its 6th year on London’s West End, where it continues to play to packed houses, We Will Rock You has captivated 6 million theatre-goers around the world from London to Las Vegas, Toronto to Tokyo and beyond.
We Will Rock You is an enormous multi-million dollar musical featuring stunning costumes, sets and lighting. The talented international cast includes New Zealand’s pop princess Annie Crummer as the Killer Queen and “Rock Star INXS†finalist Miguel Ayesa, who reprises his West End success, in the starring role of Galileo.
We Will Rock You is not a Queen tribute but a “rock musical’ featuring 26 of Queen’s legendary hits including “Bohemian Rhapsodyâ€, “We Are The Championsâ€, “Killer Queenâ€, “Another One Bites The Dust†and “This Crazy Little Thing Called Loveâ€.
We Will Rock You delivers a show that reflects the scale and spectacle that marked Queen’s live performances and earned the band its pinnacle position in rock history.
“Queen’s musical is kind of magic…spectacular…what an evening. Magnifico.†The Sun
If you ask me, I’d recommend that you see We Will Rock You! only if:-
- you enjoy Queen’s music
- you enjoy rock music
- you don’t mind loud music
- you don’t mind a lack of a story line
If you are expecting a musical with poignancy like Les Miserables or Miss Saigon or even Phantom of the Opera, with elaborate props and operatic musical overtures then I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed. But if you enjoy some loud rock music, loads of humorous dialogue and tongue in cheek references to rock music and rock stars, make a beeline for this one.
The humor in the dialogue certainly has Ben Elton written all over it. It was really really funny. I found myself laughing away at all the hidden references to rock music and rock stars and there was a very poignant moment when they paid tribute to all the rock stars who have died. And look out also for a guest appearance by Victoria Beckham. Star of the show, that one!
The whole musical has not much of a story line though. A boy (Galileo Figaro) aching to break free from the stereotypical music of Globalsoft corporation and meeting a like minded girl in Scaramouche (You just know its going to only get cheesier!) and meeting the Bohemians … inane stuff like that; so don’t expect a story line, just enjoy the music, because it is truly awesome. Its almost like being at a rock concert especially at the end when everyone gets up and dances along (as best you can in a cramped seat) and their rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody really sends shivers down your spine.
We Will Rock You! runs till 27th April at the Esplanade Theatre in Singapore and tickets can be purchased online at SISTIC. Believe me, its really awesome!
And now for gratuitous food pictures of breakfast:-

They have Sausage McMuffin with Egg and McCappuccino! Of course I had to have it. Along with all sorts of other porky goodies sold everywhere. Unfortunately, most of my meals were with others so I did not feel right to snap pictures of food – have to maintain a professional image yes?
And finally, the first question I was asked when I got back – What did you buy? My answer – NOTHING! I did not manage to get any shopping done because no sales were on and I was strapped for time. That said, I did scout out a few things I might be interested in and The Great Singapore Sale starts end May 2008 so guess where I’ll be in June?
“We will… we will rock you!“

Way to spend the weekend, Paris B! How I envy you!
That sounds like a rockingly fun weekend! One of my ex-bosses went to see We Will Rock You in Singapore over the weekend too. Wonder if you passed by each other in the stadium? LOL.
We went there last night with friends. It was definitively too loud. Why is bad performance in Singapore always being compensated by high decibel volume? We found that quite often on weak performances. Even Queen did not need that noise to attract the audience.
We were a bit disappointed of the live performance of some key actors. The last part “We will rock you” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” is the best part.
My tip: Save money, cheap tickets in the rear part of the theater are enough unless you need to test your pain level of hearing.
Omg.. OMG… O M G!
You are so lucky. That sounds like so so much fun!
GT: You wouldn’t have envied the boring meetings! heh…
rinnah: Hehe… who knows eh? It was an awesome surprise.
Bernd: Yes, definitely too loud for such a small place but I was sitting quite far up so it wasn’t too bad.
Andie: The music part was fun, the work part wasn’t LOL…
Aww looks like such a fun time!
PS: Is it weird that I’m salivating over the sausage McMuffin ah?
Wow, all I can think of was that Heath Legder movie A Knight’s Tale!!! Great Queen music, and great movie!!
Hehe.. sounds like a fun weekend for you, PB!
Stop posting pictures of food, you make me crave all sorts of weird stuff! LOL
Tine: Not weird. It was yummy!
LB: Ah! I must get a hold of that one then.
Cheesey: Yep fun indeed-y! Ok I’ll limit food posts to my other site then hehe…
Nice review. I love any kind of Queen music, the louder the better! You didn’t meet any of the leads after the show?
