Do you have an irrational fear?

by ParisB on April 10, 2008

Do you?

I do.

I cannot bear to see books placed upside down on shelves.

This irrational “fear” stems from a story I read as a wee kid. I cannot remember the title of the story now, but it was a boy who would not keep his books properly on the shelf and would stack them upside down or any old way. One night, he woke up to find that the words were falling out of one of his books that was placed upside down!

He of course embarked on an adventure to return all the words that had fallen out into the empty pages of the book. I don’t quite know why that story made such an impact on me, but it did.

Until today, I cannot stand to see books placed upside down on a shelf or anywhere and will always turn them upright anywhere I go. I’m afraid that I’d pick up the book and find the pages empty, with all the words piled on the shelf in a messy pile.

I was reminded of this as I was packing up some documents into a bag. My colleague was helping me stuff the documents in and they went in head first. I was quick to stop him and to turn them around before placing them into the bag bottom first. Story or not, I did not want to end up with a bag full of empty paper and random words!

What’s your irrational “fear”?

Yours fluffily

Haha… it’s not an irrational fear for me, more like an OCD. I can’t stand to see things out of place, even in shopping malls and bookstores. I’ll rearrange them neatly. LOL.

That’s too funny. I would LOVE to go to bookshops with you. You are going to be soooo busyyy!

My irrational fear : I can’t leave house without any makeup at all. Is that just fear or me being silly?

Haha, after reading Rinnah’s comment, I’d admit mine’s more of an OCD too, rather than an irrational fear. I can’t stand having a whole bunch of untidy cables and wires around. Hubby drives me absolutely CRAZY when he leaves all the telly cables and all that lying about without using cable ties, etc. Something I picked up from my first boyfriend, actually :P

Okay, onto an irrational fear. I can’t go on long escalators without my legs going jelly. I can’t look up and I can’t look down. A lot of escalators in Japan are very long, and it freaks the hell out of me. I gripped the sides so hard, that my nails would make imprints on the rubber. There was once it got so bad, I had to sit down, on the ramp, because I actually got dizzy looking down.

Rinnah took the words right out of my…ummm…fingers? I agree it’s a form of OCD. Everything has to be neat and tidy all the time. My irrational fear or form of OCD is that I need to fold all my clothes before I wear them. But now that you have told me about your book OCD, I better go back and check that all my books are in upright position too.
By the way, my documents go in bottom first as well :)

@Rinnah, Tine & GT: Looks like we can form an OCD club. I can’t live with untidy program codes. I will spend half a day making sure each line of code has the same number of spaces, each name is properly capitalized and so on.

My irrational fear is trying my best not to open doors with my hands. I will use elbows, forearms or even my fist to open the doors.

I also have a mold-phobia, so I throw out any food that has a possibility of harboring mold.

I can’t stand it too when people stack CD/books haphazardly, I like them all stacked properly so that the words all face one way. I don’t fear the words or music notes floating away though… just can’t stand it.

My silly fear is… er… I always think flying insects will get into my ears. That’s why I frequently sleep with blankie covering my ears, so that mozzies can’t get in.

Rinnah: Oh I’m ok with mess but I’m just scared of the words falling out of the books LOL…

Andie: You aren’t being silly. Every girls needs a touch of makeup! :)

Giddy Tiger:Wow will you come and fold my clothes?

Adino: Why not use your hands?! But mold is a good phobia esp with a baby on the way!

Cheesey: Wah come organize my stuff leh… and what does TM say about you hiding under the covers eh?

Pablo: LOL!!!!

I read everyone’s irrational fears or OCDs.. and then realized I can’t think of one for myself. I like neat and tidy, but that’s nothing irrational there. I obsess about lormaikai, but truly I know when to stop. Dang… no fun here!!
