Have you ever had a time when you were glad you overslept? I just did.
I was due to go out of town early on Saturday morning. I was getting picked up at 6.30am so set my alarm for 6am.
At 6am, the alarm buzzed and I hit the snooze button. I did this a few more times until it was about 6.15am. Then, I decided I’d finally haul my butt out of bed.
And then I heard it.
BOOM!
The loudest explosion to occur INSIDE my en suite bathroom!
I lay in bed a few more minutes while I waited to see if Batman would fly through my closed bathroom door, but there was no further sounds save a soft tinkling. Nervously, I opened the bathroom door and switched on the light.
This is the sight that greeted me at 6.15am:-

My glass shower screen had exploded into smithereens! :O
I was quite groggy at this point, both from the shock and from the early morning, but I kept my head about me as I calmly reached for my camera to record this scene for posterity.

What is a blogger to do right?
I have no idea how or why it happened.
The glass was solid just the night before when I had my shower, and there was no indication of anything wrong with it. It was an unearthly hour of 6am when it happened and no one was in the bathroom at this point so it could not have been anyone hitting it. I have no explanation for the glass shattering except:-
(a) There was a sonic boom from a plane flying overhead; or
(b) There was an earth tremor
I did not hear the former and there were no news of the latter, so I still have no idea how or why a 1.2cm thick sheet of glass could shatter out of the blue!
After the initial shock, I had to marvel at how pretty the patterns were:-

It was a sheet of tempered glass, so it shattered into relatively safer bits of glass with rounder edges instead of shards of glass. I did think that if it was normal glass, bits of it might have embedded themselves into the door upon the explosion!

So, imagine if I had woken up just a few minutes earlier and decided to take a morning shower. I might be writing this entry from the hospital instead of being unscathed and documenting this eventful weekend!
For the record, I’m replacing the shower screen with a PVC screen. Not as lovely to look at, but a heck of a lot cheaper and a ton safer too! I still cannot explain why my screen shattered after 2 years plus, but this might serve as a warning to anyone with glass screens to be careful. Some day, this might happen to you too!

What a close call! I’m glad you’re ok though, although it really gives me the shivers thinking of what might have happened had you NOT been lazy!
Oh dear…glad you’re okay! Looks like sleeping in has its advantages eh?
Wow…that sounded really scary! Luckily you weren’t in there when it happened.
Was Googling about this after reading your post…these two websites might be of interest…=)

Gasp! You were very fortunate!
Btw your bathroom looks really nice! I love the wall tiles.
Thankfully you were not in the bathroom. It is odd indeed. But like what Adino mentioned, I can’t but be pleased with the nice looking shower suite (minus the glasses, of course).
Omgawsh! That was a seriously close call indeed. Thank heavens you’re okay.
Haha… very blogger of you to reach for the camera first instead of anything else.
But then again, glass isn’t supposed to shatter by itself out of the blue. Are you going to take it up with the manufacturer?
OMG, spontaneous explosion? That’s freaking! Thank God no one was in the bathroom.
But dang, that’s one good-looking shower suite

Gosh .. that’s really bad. The glass looked thick .. I wonder what caused it. Did you find out what happened? PVC is not bad.
that’s so weird! im glad u weren’t in there, even getting hit by rounded glass bits won’t be too safe i think.
WOW thank God you were snoozing! What a surreal experience! I can’t believe that tempered glass can shatter like that!
You know I had my back door shatter on me like that too, except mine wasn’t tempered at the time. It was a gust of wind that slammed my door shut, but I could literally feel the blast, even though I was in the living room. Flying glass is scary!
To All: Thanks for your concern everyone! I still cannot fathom how it happened but it looks like it might be a tempered glass thing. Thankfully I was asleep! And I actually disliked my shower area because of the mosaic – funny how everyone likes it!
