The madness continues…

by ParisB on September 13, 2008

Yesterday when I left thing as they were with the madness beginning, I was surprised but not entirely shocked by the actions taken. After all, it looked inevitable.

However, I AM shocked by today’s news that 2 other people have been detained under the ISA – one an elected member of parliament and member of the Selangor State Assembly and the other a newspaper reporter.

In the case of Teresa Kok, I was surprised at her arrest under the ISA because I recall reading in the Star yesterday that a member of the mosque in question had come out to refute statements that they were forced to turn down the speakers for the call to prayer, and also that it was all an act of God – the mosque was struck by lightning. Needless to say, fingers were pointed at Teresa Kok by a certain person I will not even name because the thought of him makes me nauseous.

As for the reporter, I am truly indignant. The lady was just doing her job for crying out loud. If certain members who got little smacks on their wrist and toothless admonishments of “Don’t do it again” did not incite feelings of racism there would be nothing to report would there? Now, the person who made the statement is going on a “road show” around the country to “explain himself” thereby repeating the statements over and over and he isn’t sorry. Don’t do it again? Which part of that can’t you understand?!

It is a sorry time indeed. Malaysia’s political history has never looked so bleak nor so black. I see the arrests as a desperate attempt to flex political clout at a time when ranks are fractured both within and without. I predict it will backfire and blow up in the faces of those who are making this desperate move while their political enemies sit back and laugh themselves stupid.

Oh and for a moment of humour in the face of darkness, the kerropi (frogs) are all coming back from Taiwan tomorrow, cutting short their agricultural study trip. Wait a minute… I thought they were supposed to be away until the dreaded September 16 was over? Or were they so afraid of a mere 5 MPs from the Opposition who also wanted to learn some agricultural tips?

Madness indeed. I initially thought they have forgotten the existence of ISA act when the sorry man went on ‘road show’. I m so naive. Lessons about Msia laws which I learnt from General Paper classes were useless!? Sigh…
