A Curve-y Weekend

by ParisB on December 14, 2008

Saturday saw me rushing off to The Curve at Mutiara Damansara for a MySimplifieds event. It was fun and I’d never been to the Curve on a weekend (surprisingly enough!) so I had a good time going through the weekend bazaar. I was not even aware that there are 3 sections to the weekend bazaar (or weekend flea market as it is also known as) – One at the Cineleisure area, one on The Street where the food area is, and another at the entrance close to Borders opposite Tesco.

The activity saw us running from one end of the bazaar to the other within a set time but I was quite glad for it, because I managed to pick up a Noren! What is a Noren? This is it:-

Noren

It is the Japanese split curtain that you often see hanging above doorways in Japanese restaurants. The ones we see are usually the short ones but they do come in various sizes to fit the different door sizes. I had been wanting to get one for a while, to act as a cover up for the doorway to my kitchen area. However, my doorway is super high so a short piece of cloth would have looked weird – rather like a fat woman trying to wear a teeny tiny yellow polka dotted bikini :P So, when I saw a stall selling the Noren that came in 5 ft lengths, I immediately snapped it up even if it cost RM72. It comes in various designs but I went for something simple in earth colours to match the rest of my home – there are little gold flecks that are noticable when light hits it which makes it very pretty.

Daiso The Curve

The second thing that made me very happy about being at The Curve on Saturday, was the opening of Daiso. Daiso, located on the 2nd floor, by HSL has a concept similar to that of the 100 Yen shops. I’d been to the one in Singapore where everything is S$2 and I’d been waiting for it to open in the Klang Valley for ages! Everything in Daiso at The Curve is priced at RM5 and the products are mainly from Japan. You can find almost anything in Daiso, from crockery to cutlery, cosmetics to bath stuff, organization to storage… its an awesome place! What made me happiest was the kitchen section. I found so many of my bento accessories there as well as bento boxes. All for a mere RM5 each. I picked up RM20 worth of bento stuff which made me very happy indeed.

And finally, just before I left for Ikea, I saw a very disturbing sight.

blush

Erm… no, I don’t think this is something that should be placed on a mannequin right in front of the store in the middle of a busy mall thoroughfare. Not being a prude, but there are KIDS walking around and I saw any number of them staring – yes I know its a lingerie store, but there are such things as tasteful lingerie you know. Best not to give impressionable young minds the wrong ideas about lingerie, yes?

And that was my weekend – other than a mad rush to the airport, but that’s a different story.

Sigh, I miss the 100yen shops in Japan. I frequented it so much then that the cashiers even know me and try not to speak in Japanese to me :p I remember buying a lot of stationery and kitchenware from these 100yen shops. These were the best to get ;)

Those are lovely curtains. I installed them in the apartment I was staying at in Japan, but took ‘em off after a month. Got annoyed at having to push them just to go to the loo (the curtains separated the loo from the kitchen) :P

@rinnah:I can forsee many happy weekends at Daiso for many of us LOL

@beetrice: Actually I wasn’t there very long. Popped in, gawked at stuff, picked up bento accessories and left for Ikea :)

@Tine: I’m loving pushing the noren aside for now as its a divider between my kitchen and the rest of the house hehe… Actually its something I’ve always wanted for my kitchen so its perfect. Our other 100 Yen stores here pale in comparison to Daiso!

Very nice Noren, I’d say!
Oh, and how I envy you …with being able to shop at Daiso and all! I simply must go when I head for The Curve next…
No comments on that ugly piece of lingerie…I wouldn’t even call it lingerie to begin with!
