Problem updating your AVG Antivirus?

by ParisB on December 23, 2008

The past  couple of days, I’d been having problems updating my AVG Antivirus program. It usually updates automatically every morning, but for some reason, the last few days, I’d get a notice that says:-

Invalid Control CTF Upgrade File

Or something stupid like that.

Pissed me off big time. Blamed it on screamyx, blamed it on the crappy computer, blamed it on everything. Then, today I googled the solution and don’t ask me why I never did it before :P

Thanks to this site, I found my solution. Basically, in idiot proof language for Windows XP, here’s what you do to get AVG8 updated and working again:-

  1. Go to Windows Explorer (Look under Start -> All Programs -> Accessories)
  2. Go to Tools in the top bar and click on the View tab and look for “hidden files” – choose to enable hidden files and folders
  3. Go to My Computer -> C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Avg8\update\download – If you missed out on Step 2 you will not see the Application Data folder
  4. You will see 2 files with the file extension .ctf – delete the buggers!

Go back to your AVG and click to upgrade. It should work like a charm now. :)
