Unusually for me, I’ve been behind on my 2009 Oscar news. I swear, every year I get more and more behind. I don’t think I’ve seen even 1 Best Picture nomination – there was a time when I’d seen them all. In fact, I don’t even know what are the movies nominated! LOL…
That aside, I found out that Slumdog Millionaire was nominated for Best Picture and not knowing anything about the movie, I googled it. In a nutshell, its about a boy from the slums of India who wins a million dollars in Who Wants to be a Millionaire? India version and um… thats it in a nutshell. However what has caught the imaginations of the World is that this is a movie about a taboo subject – the slums in India. Its like that movie City of Joy also about the slums of India – anyone remember that?
Anyway, to add to the flavour of the Oscars, a few “authentic” kids from the Indian slums were flown to Hollywood for the Oscars. I wonder if the movie people thought it through – how it would impact their lives. To be feted as celebrities on the red carpet in AMERICA and then a couple of days later to be flown home to go back to the slums.
Its offering these kids who have nothing everything, and then taking it all away from them. I just wonder if they thought it through.

Just look at them – precious eh?
But coming back to my topic. I’m not surprised that Slumdog Millionaire won the Best Picture Oscar for 2009.The minute the movie was nominated, I’m sure the Oscar statuette had been printed with their name on it. It was a given.
Movie about India slums, a rags to riches story, the oppression… exotic India. Its Hollywood – even I can tell you its a winner from the start.
I’m not saying its a bad movie or a great movie – I haven’t seen it – I’m just saying that the laws of the universe and the magic of Hollywood would dictate that a movie of this nature would win against all odds.
Hooray for Hollywood!!

when looking at the photo, i can’t help but wonder if the kids were really from the slums – just check out the kid on the extreme left..what a pose! o.O
@Beetrice: Ya they didn’t look too overawed and they sounded articulate. But then kids adapt easily. Now to hope they re-adapt just as easily.
@rinnah: Glad to provoke some thoughts!
@giddy tigress:
You know, I never thought of it this way until you wrote about it… and also @bee’s comment above! Hmm…
Those kids sure enjoyed themselves, I’d say! And it was a given that Slumdog would win hands down…
But you have written about this from a different perspective….
