WordPress 3.0 gave me a heart attack

by ParisB on June 18, 2010

I have been blogging for more than 4 years now and 3+ years of that has been on WordPress which is a great blogging platform.

The latest upgrade to flash at my from my dashboard when I logged in today was that WordPress has been graded to 3.0.

I might have been blogging on WordPress since its 1.X days but I’m a total n00b when it comes to doing things like upgrading WordPress. I used to rely on Fantastico for upgrades.

When WordPress … I mean WordPress incorporated the upgrades into the 2.X install I was thrilled and I used it without problems. Today, I went and upgraded my food blog to trial and it went without a hitch.

Then I updated this blog – smooth as single malt whiskey.

And then I hit up the mother of all upgrades – the beauty blog. And immediately, I fell down a hole.

The upgrade hung and I was left staring at something called a “Maintenance Mode” where I had no access to my dashboard, no access to my site and basically, left me wondering where my head was.

After a few minutes, I dashed off an email to my host to ask if he could help. A few minutes later, I checked back and voila! Everything was back up!

So apparently, when the WordPress database takes a while to upgrade, it sets your whole blog into maintenance mode. That’s not to say its not working behind the scenes. When its all ready, it’ll all come back.

Whew!

So, what’s new with WordPress 3.0? No idea it all looks the same to this n00b :P

p/s one thing I noticed from this upgrade. If you type “WordPress” (small caps for the P) it automatically changes it to “WordPress”
