Contest: Ribbon - Pink for October

I read about this contest that Pelf is running for Pink for October and I decided to participate (the best I can). The first word is Ribbon and I did not have time to get any picture that is Breast Cancer related, but here is a picture I took for my soon to be wedded sister.

The tendrils of the plants hanging down have such a pretty ribbon like effect as they sway to and fro in the breeze.

Breast Cancer Fact:

It is a little known fact but men can get breast cancer too. (source)

So Breast Cancer Awareness Month is not just for women, its also awareness for men.

Go watch Mamma Mia! Go! Go!

Its September 2008 and if there’s one movie I recommend that EVERYONE watch in 2008, its Mamma Mia! Thanks to Nuffnang, I was at GSC 1 Utama last night to catch this movie for free! What’s better than an excellent feelgood fun movie? A FREE feelgood fun movie :P

I won’t have any spoilers, so my advice is just to go and watch:

  • Meryl Streep sing - that woman is multi talented I tell you! I’m amazed
  • Pierce Brosnan sing - *muffled giggles and horrified groans of disbelief*
  • The beautiful turquoise sea of Greece
  • The gorgeous scenery of a Greek island (and wonder how anyone gets anywhere climbing those rocks)
  • The kitzchy performance of Super Trouper - guarantee to make you cringe, laugh and sing along all at once
  • The Greek gods take off their shirts at every opportunity
  • Wonder why everyone on a Greek island is either speaking with an English or American accent
  • the enjoyable songs of ABBA being performed in a most unusual way
  • the seamless way the music fits into the movie… but then the movie was written for the songs so I guess it only made sense that it fit! :P

It was fun, it was funny, it was enjoyable, it was singalong karaoke… I want to do it all over again! Like Kimberlycun, I wanna see it again! But how come I didn’t see you yesterday Kim?!

Now Mamma Mia the Musical! That’s going down on my calendar!

Political Tango - come dance with me!

Come dance with me!

Lets tango! Swap your partners and swap your portfolios too!

Twirl your partner. Oops too hard - they’ve flown out of the dance floor!

Maybe its time to learn a new dance. What do you think?

Mamma Mia! I have a Dream!

Mamma Mia

When Mamma Mia! opened in London and then worldwide, guess who missed it? Even when I had the chance to go back to London guess who opted to watch Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat instead? *slaps self*

But remember? I said dream it and it will happen right? Anyone watched Field of Dreams starring Kevin Costner? “If you dream it they will come” Mystical. And so, I dreamed it. For many many years. I dreamed that Mamma Mia! the Musical will come to Malaysian shores…

And what d’ya know? Its 2008 and Mamma Mia! is here! Well ok, its the movie version with Meryl Streep and the droolicious (but aging) Pierce Brosnon but hey! Its got ABBA songs and that m’dears is what Mamma Mia! is all about!

Mamma Mia Movie Poster

I grew up on a veritable diet of ABBA so it is natural that I enjoy the cheesy disco style Eurovision kitch music that ABBA dishes up. Its not to say that they aren’t good. Their songs are memorable and the tunes catchy. Whoever thought that Sweden had it in them to give us the biggest pop hit wonders since Ikea?! Well, Ikea isn’t a pop hit wonder but its Swedish :P

I wanna see this movie. I missed the musical doesn’t mean I gotta miss the movie right? The last movie I saw with ABBA songs in them was Muriel’s Wedding. Anyone remember this ozzie flick? The scene with Dancing Queen is quite surreal but then so was the whole movie.

So, Voulez-vous! I have a Dream and I am no Dancing Queen but Take a Chance on Me and Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! the tickets to Mamma Mia! already Fernando! I am a Super Trouper and Money Money Money no object for if I don’t catch this one it will be my Waterloo!

Whee!

The Torch is lit and the Games begin!

Here’s a bt of a “funny” story - not funny haha but funny strange.

In the evening of 08-08-08 I was having a discussion (bet) with a friend as to how the Beijing Olympic Torch will be lit. In my mind is still fresh the image of archer who shot the burning arrow into the cauldron at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. To be honest, I cannot remember the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron from the last 2 Olympics.

Anyway I said that maybe since it is China and since we all know how kungfu masters in Chinese movies can “fly”, maybe someone will “fly” up and light the torch. We both laughed at that and went home to watch the Opening Ceremony.

So imagine my surprise and delight when Li Ning rose up into the sky and “ran around the stadium roof” and eventually lit the Olympic Torch in the air! The first thing I did was pick up my phone and text this message

“I was right! They flew up to light the torch!”

And for me, this display of the lighting of the torch at the Beijing Olympics sits right up there with Barcelona as one of the most memorable ever. Barcelona edges it just a little for the “wow factor” as my sis calls it but this is still pretty impressive nonetheless.

The rest of the opening was humdrum for me. Then again, most Chinese classical anything is humdrum for me! I was impressed however with the fact that there were so many PEOPLE involved! Then again, this is China - people are no object.

I also noticed one interesting characteristic:-

Smaller countries who came out into the stadium (Malaysia included) were either marching along seriously or walking with serious determination. You could see it on their faces. Contrast that with the sporting power houses - Australia, USA, Great Britain… and their atheletes looked like they were having fun, horsing around and having a good time. Perhaps the smaller countries are overwhelmed by the crowd, or perhaps they feel the pressure of competing… but don’t they all?

I have no comment about Malaysia’s hopes and the contingent uniform except to say that burnt orange does not suit everyone and especially not the dusky skinned!! They should have stuck to the white outfits they wore at the last games with the coloured stripes. The team ended up looking merely dull which I hope is not a reflection of our performance in these games!
