On the campaign trail

The poster war for the elections has begun with a vengence!

Behold the eyesores that litter the towns once every 4-5 years. Once every 4-5 years, the local council gives out an advertising permit (yes you need it!) to allow political parties to litter the area with paper, bits of string, plastic bags and lately, banners.

My question is: How effective is it to hang up election posters?

If you are a voter, won’t you already have more or less made up your mind who you should be voting for? Does it help you decide when you see posters of the candidate and the party they represent hung from string at intersections, traffic lights or roundabouts? In my case, I feel quite repulsed at the huge wasted expense and I get sick of seeing the plastic bags flapping away in the breeze, knowing full well that it will still be hanging there weeks after the elections are over.

Some supporters even take it to extremes by decorating their vehicle:-

Or they might just be helping the candidate on his rounds.

And here’s a picture I took in the car that I thought turned out very strangely. This is what delayed capture on a phone camera does to your photo - distort it… or is it? The left looks distorted but the right side looks normal. You see, I didn’t think I saw that pakcik walk past at all!

What phone? What phone?

Great, after everything legal gets settled, the mind-boggling question starts.

What mobile phone should I get?

I don’t want something too expensive. Breaking the RM1.5k to RM2k barrier or coming close is cutting too close for comfort for me. I cannot justify carrying around something that expensive and that likely to disappear either through carelessness or theft.

So, this is what I want in a mobile phone:

  • Makes and accepts calls
  • Easy to use for SMS
  • Camera
  • Wifi (if possible)
  • Bluetooth
  • Below RM1k if its not asking too much
  • Candybar style preferred but flip or slide will be considered
  • Slim

Is there any phone out there that matches the above criteria and looks decent? I’m not considering any “underwater phones” and neither am I looking at LG. I’m also afraid of Sony Ericsson’s dreaded “lag”, otherwise I would be happy to consider any of the SE Cybershot phones since they take awesome photos.

Anyway, tell me your mobile phone recommendations and why in the comments form below please! Thank you kindly! :)

Monday Nights - a great start to the week

I never look forward to Mondays because it always means the start of yet another work week. But Monday evenings are another thing altogether.

Monday evenings mean that:

(a) Monday’s over! and
(b) Crime night!

I don’t have Astro so I thrive for Monday nights where I get my weekly dose of crime tv shows back to back – CSI:NY and Criminal Minds. Whilst CSI gets my adrenalin pumping, it is Criminal Minds that really grip my attention and fire my imagination.

crime

The plots and storylines of Criminal Minds, which follow the case files of the Behavourial Analysis Unit (BAU) of the FBI, is not only mind-twisting, the horrors showcased sometimes chills the blood. Today’s episode for example, had people who hunt other people in the woods for sport. Never mind that they get human blood all over their hunting boots from the “hunting” they do. I read somewhere that most of the ideas are obtained from true events. If it is, then there are some really really sick people out there indeed!

The mind-numbing terrestial tv ads aside, I think this is an awesome series and absolutely worth watching and sitting through the ads. Try it. The acting is par excellance too!

Or Eid Mubarak or Eid-ul Fitr or whatever else you may call it, here’s to all the Muslims celebrating the end of Ramadhan and the beginning of Syawal.

If you are Muslim, why are you reading this? Why aren’t you enjoying your celebrations with friends and family? Go! Go! :)

And I, a non-Muslim, thank you for the long holiday. :)

Maaf zahir dan batin.

Ouch! So embarrassing!

Leah tagged me on my embarrassing moments a while ago. I’m sorry I took so long, Leah but honestly, although I must have many embarrassing moments, its all slipped my mind. I think its the power of the mind to file away all memories you wish to forget I guess, and to store it away in the dusty attics of your mind.

But while racking my brains, and after reading Leah’s post, I remembered an incident which was both extremely painful and embarrassing.

I was in a crowded place, walking past a little mamak stall, and was carrying some documents to my car while walking behind my colleague. We had to cross over a tiny little drain which had a piece of wood covering the top.

I’m not sure what happened next, but one minute I was walking across that tiny little drain, and the next minute, I was sprawled on the floor, documents spread all over the ground, and bleeding from my knees. There was a stunned silence and then some kind people came over to help me collect my documents and to enquire if I was alright. My knees were skinned and bruised and so was my chin. I was wiping up blood and I just sat on the floor stunned.

It did not occur to me to be embarrassed until later when I realised I’d torn my skirt in the process. The bruises went away after a while, but till today, my knee is a bit funny. I can’t put too much pressure on it and its been more than 5 years. So, I suppose it was pretty embarrassing, but it was more painful than anything else.
